So in a previous post, I did throw out for discussion a potential new class of missile that would be fired from a small periscope sized vertical launch tube. I kind of thought it was a bit of a game changer in the littoral world. There is precious little ASW capability in most littoral environments....

As a foot note to my previous post, the French Amethyst is also almost identical size in submerged displacement to the Barbel. I find that pretty interesting and starts placing the discussion right back to the original post that started this particular forum. Back in the late 90's before Canada "Nuk...

Keeping in line with cost effective SSN's for blue water service, I see the French Amethyst is only 2600t displacement with a crew of under 70. It would seem to me that the US would have no problem spitting out subs in this size range at a significant reduction in both capital as well as operating c...

As the newer class subs are more multifunctional, and therefore much larger than what is required for pure blue ocean patrol duties, do any of you see the US bringing back a smaller more cost effective SSN say of the Skipjack class size range?

I guess I am still looking for some feedback on the ideas presented by everyone. I originally came to the forum because I thought there was some merit in SSK designs to compliment and or augment SSN's typical mission assignments. Also since the forum started there is now a confirmed reality of huge ...

Well Tim............I use to love all kinds of naval vessels. I even built the Bainbridge as a model when I was a kid. I guess because of what I do for a living, over time I have become more of a strategist and an economical thinker and all things military seem to keep me interested. Probably more s...

Hi Tim You are quite correct that there is very little strategic value for US operations currently in the warm Caribbean. Aside from keeping Hugo in line (and it doesn't take much to do that) their interests lie mainly abroad. I do however want to point a few things out so everyone works with same a...

One thing I failed to mention right off in my first post was that Barbel Class with the propulsor is one really cool looking boat. My understanding is that not only do they eliminate prop noise, but from 15 knots and slower are a lot more efficient than a prop as well.

Well..........I certainly hope to see more effort on our military. The one thing that has happened in the last few decades is the advent of various forms of PGM's (precision guided munitions). These have been enormous game changers in all forms of combat and are considered the "great equalizers" or ...

Well..........I guess at the end of the day you are correct as to what the Navy wants and feel they need. It will ultimately come down to budget constraints which like it or not are coming and coming hard. In advance of that I was simply putting forward what I feel is a respectable option as the US ...
