San Diego 1944, after the Mare Island refit, in its Measure 33/24D scheme. Interestingly the ship was painted in the Measure 32 colors (black and light grey) vs. the lighter Measure 33 color scheme.

The refit added anti-aircraft guns, upgraded the foremast air search radar to SC-2, and added a venturi shield to the splinter shield around the pilot house. The Mk.37 directors also received Mk.12 radar sets, but retained their Mk.4 antennas. This is most evident by the small blister on the rear of the director (to accommodate the additional equipment inside the director shield required by the Mk.12 radar). The boat crane, K-guns and reloads, and the 40' motor launches had already been removed in a 1943 refit. Floater net bins have also been added in the usual locations. Despite the illustrations on many model kits, when San Diego sailed into Sagami Wan it was still painted in this scheme - the ship only repainted into Measure 21 (all over navy blue) after 1945.

Of particular interest is the experimental white countershading under the funnel searchlight platform and the bridge - intended to reduce shadows under overhangs.

A terrific set of drawings, Colo!

This class of ship is very pleasing on the eye.

I read somewhere that they had stability problems because of the placement of the 5" guns.

Thanks all, I may attempt some versions of the San Juan next... currently awaiting some Floating Drydock plans of the Oakland. I'm getting a bit tired of these ships and am ready to start work on something new though!!

*Votes for a conclusion to the Washington drawings, or perhaps a Colo version of the SoDaks* :D

I'm not sure why you're so interested in seeing the rest of the BB-56 variations; it really isn't that much different from BB-55 at all. The only difference I think most people would even be able to spot is BB-56's lack of a shielded platform around the fire control tower and an SK (instead of SK-2) radar on the mainmast. The rest of the changes I've identified are so small most of you wouldn't be able to spot them. I drew Washington as it appeared when it fired on and sank the Kirishima (arguably its most famous accomplishment); I probably won't bother drawing the rest of the tiny iterations.

My focus next will either be on some of the early war destroyer units, the pre-war heavy cruiser wartime refits, or maybe some of the Standard battleship refits. Of particular interest to me are also the late-war Gearing class radar pickets, but first I want to draw some stuff that has never been drawn before - everything I've made in the last few years has been a redraw of a redraw.

The South Dakotas are interesting but I probably won't draw them. I want to focus on some of the lesser known ships (like the early DDs) that don't get any attention around here.
