In this thread I hope to present unbuilt ships of the Polish Navy - both pre- and post-WW2. Contrary to my previous threads (Polish Coastal Combatants and Amphibious Landing Ships), this one will be updated only infrequently - depending on availability of sources (and on my own mood ). Of course I invite everyone else with necessary knowledge to participate in this thread as well. As I have mentioned in the "Amphibious Landing Ships of the Polish Navy" thread, modernization program of the landing flotilla of the Polish Navy officially commenced in 1984, however design studies about potential replacements of the ships in use were underway already since 1977. Initial projects of the Pr.767 medium landing ship (that ultimately become Lublin class) were finished in late 1983 and early 1984: Pr.767-I project of 1983 was ca. 108m long and 15m wide, with 3130t of displacement at 3,1m draught. It was to be armed with AK-176 76mm gun, two AK-630M 30mm AAAs, 2 Grad 122mm MRLs and 2 Fasta launchers for Strela-2M SAM's. Additionaly it was to be capable of installing 6 launchers of mine-clearing line charges ŁWD-100/5000 Sosna on bow. It was to be propelled with 4 diesel engines Sulzer-Cegielski 16AT-V 25/30D with 3520kW power each, giving it speed of 20 knots. Capacity: 10 T-72 tanks or 17 BMP-1 IFV's and a helicopter pad. Pr.767-II project of 1984 had same length, but had more narrow hull (13,5m), smaller displacement (2700t) and draught (29,5m). It's engines were to be of the same type as on Pr.767-I, but only two of them, instead of four, so the speed were to be only 16,5 knots. Armament was to be similar, with exception of Grad launchers. Pr.767-III project of 1984 showed much smaller ship - barely larger than Pr.770: 78m long, 9,7m wide, displacement of 1000t at 2,05m draught. Capable of transporting 5 T-72 tanks (7 if overloaded), it was to be propelled by two diesel engines 40DM (as used on Pr.770/771/773) as armed with 4 ZU-23-2 AAAs, 2 Fasta launchers and up to 6 Sosna launchers. Among the early studies there were also such concepts as catamarans or dockships, but they didn't proceed beyond preliminary designs. Because 1984 program put forward modified demands, also the three abovementioned projects were dropped and instead a wholly new ship was eventually designed and built. Around the same time Bulgarian Navy ordered a project of minelayer/landing ship, designated Pr.649, although information about it is rather scarce (I could actually use only one drawing, and almost no text description ). |

Thank You for kind words! In the 1990s lack of domestic orders for landing ships (well, practically for any warships) directed the attention of Polish shipyards towards foreign markets. Stocznia Marynarki Wojennej (Naval Shipyard) in Gdynia created an upgraded Pr.773: NS-720 design line, hoping mainly for orders from the Indian Navy (NS-721), but eventually selling only one ship to Yemen (NS-722). Today this design, as NS-723 (with minor changes from the Yemeni ship) still nominally remains in the shipyard's offer. Additionaly the shipyard designed (and built two for Yemen) enlarged version of Pr.716 landing craft - NS-717. Also Stocznia Północna (Northern Shipyard) from Gdańsk prepared new designs. First of them was Pr.2201 large landing ship, which was essentialy slightly updated Pr.775 (NATO Ropucha), with engines and electronics to be installed according to buyer's wishes (though planned armament was to remain as on the baseline ships). Shipyard didn't limit itself to this one design, though, and in the end of 1990s it presented baseline designs for two, largely similar vessels: Pr.7062 and Pr.7062-I. Their basic dimensions were to be almost identical (99 and 100m long respectively, 12,5m wide, 2m of draught and 2200t of displacement - although identical displacement for ships with so different configuration of superstructure seems unlikely, but that's how it was stated in my sources). Their armament and electronics equipment was to be chosen by buyer, but baseline designs mentioned 2 30mm AA guns (either AK-630 or twin Breda 30mm), two 122mm MRL's, 2 Mistral SAM launchers. Both were to have helicopter pad, but only Pr.7062-I also a helicopter hangar. First design was to have "drive-through" landing deck (with ramps at bow and stern) and capacity of up to 7 T-72 tanks or 4 of 60-tonne category, second one with ramp only on bow. |

Really well done, and nice to actually learn the stories of these that I've seen before in rough scetches, but all description has been bit... well, Polish to me |
