Halcyon Class Cruisers.


Just two of this class were authorised. They were to be long range patrol cruisers with exceptional speed to allow them to also act with destroyers. The ultimate flotilla cruiser. Both France and Italy built similar ships - virtually unarmoured speed demons. With light armour and 90,000shp both ships made over 33 knots at near full load. In light condition with 110% of power both ships made 35.5 knots on trials. By the start of war both ships were down to a sea speed of about 32 knots which was still quick enough for their primary role of patrol cruiser.
