Hi Everyone,

I'm completely new at this so before i go headlong into creating an AU empire I'm going to be using this thread to garner advice/feedback and to check that I'm doing everything correctly when it comes to the style rules, scale etc.

Please see my first ever attempt at an SB design below;

Hi Oberon,

Well, I'm only a beginner myself, but I'd say a) good start on the small ship, looks pretty good already and b) good to start on a small ship - wish I'd done that!

Any chance of an underwater hull?

Thanks for the encouragement 'apdsmith'.

I haven't been able to find a reference image/s sufficient to get the underwater features correct, and not wanting to make a hack-job of it, I simply didn't attempt it. These Tugs are Based on a proprietary series of designs by Robert Allen Pty Ltd Naval Architects of Canada - their hydrodynamic design characteristics and placement of features such as azipods (Z-drives) and keel skegs one would assume are trade secrets and therefore not likely to be featured on publicly available General Arrangement drawings and the like.

Cheers

Welcome aboard, and it is very nice seeing some newbie attempting a small craft. To help you with the underwater hull

Hi there 'Novice'

I have seen the image you've uploaded before - it's a Voith Schneider Propulsion layout - awesome setup for deep water and tight spaces, ridiculously good 360 degree manoeuvrability. Awesome design but not quite what I had in mind for the MkIII. A more conventional Z-drive/pod and Skeg layout will suffice when I get around to it.

Might keep that one in the bag for later though, I might be able to write in a Legitimising circumstance that would warrant it on a future MkIV tug :)

Thanks for your advice and encouragement.

cheers

The original design has been updated (see original post) to include hull below the waterline.

Once again constructive comments are welcome.

Cheers

Hi Oberon,

No bow thruster? I'd have thought a tug would want maximum manoeuvrability (even with Z-drive, surely there's some occasions when you'd want to turn by pulling the bow in rather than by pushing the stern out...)

you know you have mounted the Azimut thruster in the bow. that's not exactly normal! the azimuth thruster is Normally mounted aft, while an single bow thruster is mounted in the bow.

so what you have done is moved the bow to rear, and the rear to bow. weird!
