Ahhh. Great work!

Hmmm..excellent job, Lazer...except...is it a fusta, galea, Capitanea, Patrona, galeotti, fregata or galeazza? Also, since there seem to be only a token of small hand guns, but no major ones, I date it to approx. 1480-1520? Am I right? It cannot be at the time of Lepanto (Oct. 7 1571) due the absence of the forward pointing five to seven guns (depending on classification and size of the vessel).

The galley design lasted over centuries in the Mediterranean Sea.
This galley with its length of 42 m is an "ordinary galley" or "galea sottil". The tipical width was 5 meter with a lenght-to-beam ratio of 8:1.
The venetian galley started to carry 2 guns pointing forward around 1500. Spanish Galley were having 4 side guns (and even 6) in the same period.

As command galley were used larger galley even with a third mast.

There were several "declinations" of the basic design.
The most important was the "great galley" or "merchant galley" or "galea grossa" with a ratio of 6:1, from which derived the "galea bastarda" with higher freebord.
Another important type was the "galeass" or "galeazza" : it was the venetian answer to the growth of the number of "galea bastarda" in the spanish fleet and the venetian galeasses played the decisive role in winning the Lepanto battle.
It is interesting to note that most of the large galleys were kept in reserve while other smaller vessels were used: galliots,fustas, and bergantines.
Galliot had typically a length of 27 m, fusta around 21 meter and bergantine arond 15-16 meter.

Bravo! There we go! I actually knew what sort of galley it was, since I'm very deeply interested in Mediterranean warfare during the vAntiquity and early Medieaval times (chiefly the Byzantine fleets), but your explanation know adds that crucial info to other, less knowledgeable members of our community!

I highly commend you for your noble rise to the challenge, my friend!

Now, only one kind suggestion: Since most people, admittedly don't know much about this time period, maybe one ought to put the galley type on the drawing (and if you already have done that, please ignore this last statement! )

I have studied the dromones and chelandions quite extensively. I have had a desire to draw them in this scale, though I may have to learn this scale first. There are, btw, no 'hard-copies' to have of the dromones, since the pictorial evidence is oftenmost contradictory. I, for instance' don't agree with Prof. Morrison about the absence of apostis on the Eastern medieval galleys. So, my interpretation would feature that. But...if the High and Mighty will permit, I'd like to have a shot at the Byzantine ships!

It is a common wish to see dromones... I'll take care of galley waiting for your dromone.

BTW nobody is answering my question about when and where 31 galleys were transported...
