Zhuchenko Aerostatoplan

Potentially this machine never flew, but with the Axis invasion of Yugoslavia records were lost ... and I'd like to hope that further work was done that allowed the aircraft to lift it's own weight.

Russian refugee Nikolai Zuchenko initially designed a jet-engined VTOL prototype, the Aerostatoplan. The aircraft was way in advance of engine technology, and in 1937 a scale test model of a tilt-wing propeller version was successfully tested. The Yugoslavian air force ordered construction of a prototype, a reduced scale model for an aircraft design to be operated from the seaplane tender "Zmaj" (Dragon).
With expenses mounting, the Yugoslav military stopped funding the project when it was only 90% complete, but Zuchenko uses his own funds to complete construction. In September 1939 the prototype was tested at Novi Sad airfield. Fitted with only a 50hp Walter Micron engine the aircraft was not able to raise itself from the ground. Official interest then stopped, as Yugoslavia focused on urgently arming itself. Undaunted, Zuchenko continued work on the project until the Axis invasion.
And that's where it ends. The aircraft may have been taken to Italy as a prize. The "Zmaj" was taken by Germany and renamed "Drache" where she became the test vessel for helicopter operations with the Flettner Fl 282 Kolibri.

Rogožarski R-313

One of the casualties of Yugoslavia's invasion in April 1941.

[ img ]

The successful Rogožarski SIM-XIV floatplane was developed into a landplane as the SIM-XV and windtunnel tested with twin tails. The design was further expanded and beefed up to become the R-313 heavy fighter and bomber. The prototype was fitted with a pair of Walter Sagitta IIR engines, bit production models were planned to fit more powerful German DB 601 or British Merlin engines.
In 1940 the prototype was passed to the Yugoslav air force for trials, and even with the lower powered engines the aircraft performed very successfully. An initial production run of 25 aircraft was planned to be built in 1941.
With the Axis invasion the R-313 was damaged and captured by the Germans. The aircraft was passed to the Independent State of Croatia where it was renamed as the "Independent" and repaired, and test flown on 19 May 1942. The aircraft had been sabotaged though and was rendered unrepairable and written off.

I need a blank version of the AD-4NA for my next Around the World entry, and while I was updating Caddaric's Skyraider, i decided to Make all of them as while I was at it. I updated the 8 versions he made with some added details and updated shading, and then used them to create the others.
