Amphibious warfare has advanced dramatically over the past century. We have progressed from crude lighters and rowboats at Gallipoli to tracked landing craft at Tarawa and helicopters at Port Said. The ships tasked with transporting these landing vehicles across the ocean have progressed too. Merchant ships have given way to dedicated amphibious assault ships that dwarf all except the aircraft carriers of a fleet. Welcome to the Amphibious Assault Ship challenge! Your task, chosen by members of the community, is to draw a fictional amphibious assault ship. It can be an alternate design for a real-life navy, or a ship commissioned into a world of your own creation. Please read the design requirements and challenge rules before posting a submission. Chimaera-class Commando Cruiser Reactivated almost solely for Operation Spearfishing, the Chimaera-class hybrid aircraft carrier cruiser would find itself quickly converted into an amphibious helicopter ship. The Halcons was assigned to carry helicopters, all of which were unmarked and carrying highly trained commandos posing as Levantine mercenaries, and were sent to Satrapstan to perform a commando raid to eliminate an opposing royal pretender. The Halcons during Operation Spearfishing carried seven helicopters and around thirty commandos (the actual number of commandos seemed to be variable even according to official forces). It was reported to carry nuclear-warheads in its 8-inch guns though this too was disputed, and many official sources were contradictory. What was known that Operation Spearfishing was a success and that the Halcons would continue its operation as an LPH, this time with marked Navy helicopters, during the First Satrapi Civil War. |

Project 1182 Sarvikuono class These ships were follow on of the first series of Neuvosto LHA Project 1181 Virtahepo class with greater emphasis on aviation capability. They featured full length flight deck and ski-jump in the bow for VSTOL aircrafts. They were fitted with side ramp for loading and unloading of vehicles as well as the large well deck which could house three project 1235 Lahna class LCAC or six LCU type. Each ships is expected to form a naval infantry strike formation of about 1,600 soldiers and their equipment. Iiro Rokko is shown here in 1990 with trials for the new Ii-210 Tilt-wing aircraft which is to replace the existing heavy helicopters and form the new standard for naval infantry vertical assault operations. |

Point Class HMS Anvil Point, 2010 Designed to replace the two Round Table-class LSLs during the late 1990s when the structural improvement programme proved too problematic and expensive, the Point-class were conceived as being RFA assets for use as general transports and to augment the main amphibious warfare fleet in wartime. They are a Ro-Ro design with stern and side ramps accessing a large vehicle deck and cargo spaces. The helicopter deck can support types up to Chinook size and the upper deck forward can accommodate a range of deck cargo, including TEUs, or vehicles.
