Post subject:  Gunboat Diplomats Challenge

Heya! I'm here now to start a new Challenge for you guys.
So What is it about? Many of you should already know about the "Gunboat Diplomacy", and this Challenge is about these Gunboats.
Well, as the name of the Class says by itself they are Boats, with guns a gunboat. There is no specific period for these gunboats Diplomats but gunboats they have been around since the Age of Sails and the "Diplomats" only came to appear with the advent of steamships and the imperialist boom. So I can easily put a very long period for this challenge, but after a little research I decided to demarcate the period from 1890 to 1925. The correct would be a period starting from 1885 (Search for Berlin Conference and the Scramble for Africa to understand why.) but that isn't the exactly period that the most iconic Diplomats came out.
Look at the Examples on the site: SMS Panther(http://shipbucket.com/drawings/6647), Chaimite(http://shipbucket.com/drawings/4153), P23(http://shipbucket.com/drawings/1480/), USS PG-3 Concord(http://shipbucket.com/drawings/7269), Savorgnan de Brazza(http://shipbucket.com/drawings/2096), Uusimaa(http://shipbucket.com/drawings/5199, Vixen(http://shipbucket.com/drawings/7280), PR-8 Mindanao(http://shipbucket.com/drawings/7064), Generał Szeptycki(http://shipbucket.com/drawings/266) and Donets(http://shipbucket.com/drawings/1356)
Well, now the Guidelines:
These diplomats can be:
-River Monitors
-Coastal defense/Patrol Gunboats
-River Gunboats
-Sloops
-Avisos
Specifications:
-Laid down from 1890 to 1925(until 1930 it's is fine)
-Less than 2,000 ton Displacement
-Some average dimensions: 200 ft (61 m) long and 10–15 ft (3.0–4.6 m) draught or maybe less
-No more than 4 Single Main guns
-Main guns must be Smaller than 6"(152 mm) and bigger than 4.5"(115 mm)
-If your Ship only have guns that are Smaller than 4.5" you can have more than 4 guns, but your ship will not be a good and impressive diplomat ;)
-Torpedo gunboats are not allowed as they are considered Destroyers
-Range bigger than 5,000 nautical miles(Not obligatory but it's an interesting requeriment for some ships, because you wouldn't send a Gunboat with 1,000nm range for your colony in the other side of the world ^^)
-Max Speed of 21 knots

Hi, Jonathan.
I have a pair of candidates for your challenge. One question, can we consider the option of sail for the vessels? If the answer is affirmative, the length limit is only for the hull or it also includes the bowsprit? Cheers!

Well, as i said there the gunboats in this challenge must be from 1890-1925. In 1898 we had the Last warship designed to run with sails wich was the British Bramble class Gunboats. So the awnser is yes, you can use Sails.

Well there isn't a Lenght limit but an Average lenght from US Gunboats from that period that i found on Wikipedia, and almost all Gunboats from that period were on that Average. But i would like to set the maximum Lenght about 300 ft(91,4 m). And about the Bowspirit it doesn't count in the ship Lenght i guess... But you can include one ^^

Imma cheat a little here and just use one from my AU. Whilst she doesnt make the range category, she had provisions to ship extra coal in extenuating circumstances to make 4600nm @8kts. Also the main armament is 152.4mm, so .400001mm too large but I feel that is awfully close

Length: 195ft
Beam: 33ft
Draught: 11ft 2in
Displacement: 1040t
Speed: 16 knots, 9knots cruising
Machinery: Two Triple Expansion Reciprocating Steam Engines, 1300hp each, delivering 2600hp, four boilers
Armament: 3 x 6 inch gun (one twin forward, 1 single aft),
4 x 40(4.7") pounders,
8 x 3 pounders,
2 gatling guns,
1x fixed Torpedo tube (bow)
Range: 2450nm @ 9knts
Complement: 8 Officers, 63 Enlisted
Armour: .75-1.5" Protected Deck over machinery and magazine spaces (65% of length)

Nice Rodondo. About the Range it's fine, it isn't obligatory due several factors but the ship must be capable to do +5000nm with or without coilers(i just didn't know how to explain these factors when i made the post). There's no problem with the gun that way :p

Good morning:

This is my candidate (a version of my still WIP Imperial Russian Korietz gunboat, with lighter artillery and much less conspicous bow):
[ img ]
Of only 62 mts of hull lenght, it packs a reasonable modern artillery in the form of 3 QF 120 mm (40 pounder) guns but with lighter steel shields, 2 fore, 1 aft; 4 QF 76.2 mm (13 pounder) and 6 Hotchkiss 47 mm rapid fire guns. The "aviso" (gunboat) displaces 1150 metric tons.
It is only protected by a rather thin 4 cms armoured deck over the vitals.
It had twin triple expansion steam engines with 4 tubular boilers (Yarrow), giving a total of 2500 hp, twin screws, for a max speed of 15.5 kts, and a cruise economic speed of 8.5 kts.
As the coal bunkerage is rather scarce (the Navy was planed for a confined sea like the Mediterranean Sea, so range was not of paramount importance), for long travels, the use of sails was mandatory, but it was a poor sailer, giving only 6 kts.
The hull is painted white, for tropical service. It was well ventilated for the era, but used a rather large complement of sailors, which in turn can be used as a landing party. Cheers.

Edited! Now the 13 pounder guns are shielded! ;)

All of the entries so far look pretty good. A nice mix of styles.

Post subject:  Re: Gunboat Diplomats Challenge

Following the new elements added by Gollevainen to his Finnish AU tread, j've reread the entire post and rediscovered this ship:
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc31 ... g~original
As i'm in some kind of balkanish mood, i've realised that the smallest nation of the league did'nt saw an increase of his naval power as romania and bulgaria did.
So j've redesigned the vessel my way as if it was deliverred to its original owner.
Being a gunboat, j belive it fit this tread .
Hope it's not to much necroposting....................
