JSB, the forward 6in are mounted further inboard than the ones behind, perhaps to allow 4-6 guns to fire ahead? So it should clear the support and I felt one was needed as the deck overhang is quite large there.

The arcs of training for the twin 6in turrets are (from the plan view in Campbell's article using a strong lens)
Aftermost 90deg aft of the beam, 60 deg forward of the beam
Foremost (slightly inset) 60deg aft of the beam, 90deg forward of the beam. These are the only 6in firing right forward.
Middle two turrets 60deg fore and 60deg aft of the beam.
The same pattern for the three turrets of Battleship L (twin 18in turret version) on the same deck, while the foremost turret a deck higher has 60deg aft, 90deg forward, allowing four guns each side to fire forward.
(The main 18in turrets of L3 train 90deg and 60deg giving each a total arc of 300 degrees)
From the same plan view, the deck edge 'above' the foremost twin 6in on L is set inboard from just abaft that turret, so the deck does not actually cover its guns.

Smurf, are you sure the fore 6in on the L2 is a deck higher? From the image I'm looking at (perhaps the same one?) (admittedly trying to assign guns to the crosses on the plan view) it seems all are on the same level, as they seem to be for all the designs.

Also, I'm not sure the deck edge is the edge of the upper deck above but actually the outline of the lower superstructure. The L Twin and L Triple had different plans, seemingly at different deck levels, one of which seemed to show a lozenge shape and the other the typical 'wavy' line near the forward turrets of these designs. Its hard interpreting these top views as so little of the blocks depicted actually match anything on the topsides at all. If the deck really is stepped back that far, then what is the angled line that goes outboard? Is it possible the turrets are mounted so they have bulwarks around them but cut back decks above (to allow for the 40deg elevation)? Yet from the more detailed design of G3, we know her turrets were enclosed with such bulwarks etc.
