Goliath Class Aircraft Carrier.

The Goliath class was the first purpose built carrier for the Atlantean Navy. The previous three carriers had all been converted from either a cruiser (1) or battleship (2). The ship was being built at the same time as the Athena class carriers were being reconstructed. This helped the Goliath as the items trialled on the Athena, that worked, could be placed aboard the Goliath. The Goliath was still in the builders hands going through the trials process when WW2 broke out. Destroyers were rushed out to ensure that the Goliath was escorted back to harbour safely. Probably the best bit of the Goliath was the heavy AA battery fitted. None of the earlier 1" cannons were fitted, only the new auto-40mm turrets were fitted in twin and quad mountings.

AWS Goliath (1940) Career / Fate:

Nike Class Destroyer Escorts.

This class of 53 ships built between 1940 to 1944 were Atlantis' main contribution to the Allied cause. The half dozen battleships and aircraft carriers may have been beneficial, but it was the DDE's that escorted the materials of war from the US to UK that led to the eventual defeat of Germany. Used both as close convoy escorts and formed as hunter killer groups the Nike class ships were exactly what was required. Atlantis had been trialling all sorts of anti-submarine measures throughout the 1930's. One item was the ahead throwing spigot mortar known to the Allies as 'Hedgehog'. Hedgehog was fitted as standard to the Nike Class ships which started coming out of the builders yards in late 1940. The armament featured two twin 4" DP mountings and three twin 40mm auto-cannon AA weapons. The 40mm AA 'turret' required a handling room beneath the mounting which limited the places that it could be fitted to. Part of the automatic feature was the use of 'endless' belts of amunition where a new belt of 40mm shells could be clipped/added to the end of the previous belt so that firing could continue almost indefinitely at a rapid rate. That was the theory but in practice the guns would fire bursts of 6-10 rounds then pause to allow the barrels to cool slightly before firing again.

Fates and Losses

The 4" mounts look a little too small, especially when near the 40mm mounts; of course, it probably looks like that because the 40mm mounts are too big...

Howdy Gral, its one of those funny things. They are both off the French Gun sheet that David Latuch put together after his very good series of French Capital Ships. The 100mm/4" open backed mounting is that size. The French 37mm turret is a true turret mounting, and I make use of it as a 40mm weapon system. If the 4" was in a turret it would be bigger than the 40mm weapons. Thanks for your query.

AWS Hestia Class Light Cruisers


The final ship of the Cerberus class heavy cruisers was completed in 1930. A new design for a smaller 'light' cruiser with 6" guns was put into production which coincided with the Leander type in the UK. The design was the familiar four turret, two forward, two aft, configuration. The 6" gun was a new model and replaced the 5.5" gun that had been the cruiser standard for so long. With a range of 27,000 yards and with a 110lb shell, it was as good as any 6" gun of the same time period. The six ships were laid down in pairs completing in 1933, 1935, 1937.

Novice: The turrets are the French 6.1" off the Duguay Trouin class in the archive. I have noticed doing the Atlantis AU that some of the French weaponry is indeed small for its gun size. Particuarly the 6"/8" turrets.

I have a WW2 version to post in a day or so for the Hestias.
