---25 tonnes class gunboat---
After Japan surrendered in 1945, Japanese gunboats deployed in China were transferred to KMT government, at less 17 of them later revolted and joined the PLA. Original armament is a 13mm Type93 HMG(or 25mm Type96 in single mount) and a 7.7mm Type92 HMG. However, some of them were modified with Soviet made weapons in 1950s.

This one, No.414, won the honorary title of "Hero of Toumenshan Battle" due to sunk a ROC gunboat in 1951. The drawing above shows what it looks like after modification: Type93 HMG was moved back, a 72-K 25mm AA gun was installed to the spared place

This is what it looks like on display in Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution, Beijing now. (this drawing was updated since No.414 in the museum have been repainted recently)

---50 tonnes class gunboat---
The Japan made 25t gunboats were designed to operate in river, but PLA needed warship that could operate in the sea, so a new gunboat called Type 52A was designed to replace, mass production began in 1952. "Standard" armament including a 70-K 37mm AA gun mounted at the front, a 72-K 25mm AA gun mounted at the rear, and two DShK MG mounted one each side. But US or Japan made weapons were also selected depending on armament and ammunition store of different units.


In 1953, production of new gunboats called Type 53A began. It was based on Type 52A, but the whole upper structure was redesigned. Armament was still confused.


One year later a slightly modified version called Type 54A appeared. Armament was finally unified: a 70-K 37mm AA gun mounted at the front, a Oerlikon 20 mm cannon mounted at the rear, DShK MG mounted one each side.

Type 53A/54A were built in a great number, drew the attention of western intelligence agencies, NATO designated the reporting name "Huangpu" to them.

---75 tonnes class gunboat---
Type 55A gunboat (NATO reporting name: Shantou), much faster and powerful, designed and built after 1956. Main armament including 2 V-11 twin 37mm cannons and 2 DShK heavy MG.

This one, No.556, won the honorary title of "Sea Tiger", due to heavy damaged ROC ship PC-104 Tuo Chiang in 1958.

---100 tonnes class gunboat---
In 1958, several experimental gunboats (Type 0105, 0108, 0109, 0110) were built by different naval shipyards. They were similar in size, performance and armament. Type 0109 from Shanghai was the most successful one, 10 in total were bulit. Main armament including 2 S-60 57 mm AA gun (mounted in one turret), 1 V-11 twin 37mm cannons and 2 DShK MG. Those experimental ships were early prototypes of Type 62 series.


---Type 62 series---
In 1962, Type 0111 was finally adopted as Type 62 (NATO reporting name: Shanghai). The first mass production version was called Type 0111A. Its main armament including 2 Type 61 twin 37mm AA guns and 2 Type 61 twin 25mm AA gun (one each side), some boats may also mounted mortars or recoilless guns.


Type 0111CII is a improved version of Type 0111A, upper structure and power system were changed.


Type 0111S is an anti-submarine variant of Type 62 series, hull was extended, 3 РБУ-1200 rocket-assisted depth charge launchers (2 at the front, 1 at the rear) and sonar system were added.


After only 2 Type 0111S were built, its improved version, Type 0111SII quickly introduced. Depth charge launchers mounted at the front were reduced to 1, upper structure was changed to Type 0111CII's style.

NATO classifies Type 0111S and SII as new types of submarine chaser, and gave them a new reporting name Haizhui.

Type 62-1G is the final version of Type 62 series, based on Type 0111S's extended hull, but removed all the ASW equipment. Its manufacturing started in 1985, some may still in service as patrol boats at recent time.


---Beihai class gunboat---
Details of this gunboat are so rare, even it's official name or index are still unknow. On December 3, 1966, one Behai class, together with two Shantou class were sent to Macau, to put pressure on the Portuguese colonial government and support left-wing groups in Macao. During the confrontation, the local newspaper published a close-up picture of the Behai class, attracted the attention of Western intelligence agencies. Then NATO designated the reporting name "Beihai" to it. According details available now, it is probably a kind of harbor patrol boat.

---Type 6604 submarine chaser---
In 1955, China got 6 Pr.122bis submarine chasers (NATO reporting name: Kronstadt) from the Soviet Union, parts of 6 more were transferred to China by train and assembled locally. Those ships were designated as Type 6604. During 1965-1957, 14 more were built in China with the assistance of Soviet specialists. Type 6604 have few changes compare to the original Pr.122bis, the only significant difference is the galley, more suitable for Chinese cooking. Main armament including: 1 90-K 85mm cannon, 2 70-K 37mm AA guns, 3 Type 59 14.5mm MG (twin mount), 2 РБУ-1200 anti-submarine rocket launchers and 2 depth charge launching rails.


---Type 037 series---
In 1962, based on the blueprint of Type 6641 (Soviet Pr.201-M) delivered by the Soviet Union, China designed the new submarine chaser Type 037 (NATO reporting name: Hainan). The first ship entered service in 1964, more than 100 ships was built later. Although it was designated as a submarine chaser, but PLAN also used it as a large gunboat. For this reason, it have strong firepower: 2 Type 66 twin 57mm cannons and 2 Type 61 twin 25mm AA guns. Many Chinese military enthusiasts think it looks like a tiny battleship in weapon placement, nicknamed it as a "Yellow Water Battleship".


Type 037I (NATO reporting name: Haijiu) is a improved version of Type 037. Its hull was extended, 25mm AA guns were replaced by Type 69 twin 30mm CIWS (AK230). Although only 4 was built, but Its hull design was succeed by later Type 037 variants.

In 1986, at less 2 (688, 693) ships installed France made SS12 towed sonar system, guns and depth charge launching equipment installed on the rear deck were removed to make room for the sonar system


Type 037IS (NATO reporting name: Haiqing) is the final upgrade of Type 037 series. It inherited the extended hull from Type 037I, and refitted with a full-close upper structure. Mass production began in late 1980s, because PLAN was no longer lacking regular warships such as destroyers and frigates in that time, submarine chasers like Type 037IS became the second tier. Its firepower was reduced to 2 Type 76 twin 37mm AA guns and 2 Type 69 twin 14.5mm MG, RBU-1200 anti-submarine rocket launchers were replaced by more advance FQF-3200

"Later" version, Type 76 AA guns were replaced by H/PJ-76F with full-close turret.


Type 037IG (NATO reporting name: Houxin) is a large missile boat (or missile corvette in PLAN's term) base on Type 037. It looks similar to Type 037I, but slightly longer and has a different bridge which looks more like Type 037IS's style. Armament including 2 H/PJ-76A twin 37mm CIWS, 2 Type 69 twin 14.5mm MG and 4 YJ-8A anti-ship missiles in 2 2-cell launch containers.


Although it was named after Type 037, Type 037-Ⅱ was actually not a variant of Type 037 series, it was completely new design. Armament including 1 H/PJ-76A twin 37mm CIWS, 2 Type 69 twin 30mm CIWS (AK-230) and 6 YJ-8A anti-ship missiles in 2 3-cell launch containers. The first ship entered in service in 1991, after another 5 were built, China found it was too expensive, and selected Type 037IG as the replacement.
All 6 ships were delivered to the defense fleet of PLA Hong Kong Garrison.

The 5th ship, 774 Lianjiang is a special one. It equipped an AK-176M 76mm gun instead of H/PJ-76A. But after recovered from the serious collision in June 2006, the AK-176M was replaced by H/PJ-76A.

---Pr.123 torpedo boat---
In 1950, China bought at less 36 Pr.123 torpedo boats (NATO called "P4 Class", Chinese prefer to using this name instead "Pr.123" or "K-123") from the Soviet Union. 2 different types was delivered to China, B and K, both types have two 450mm torpedo launchers:
The B type have two twin-mount 12.7mm DShK MG turrets, have no radar.

The K type have a twin-mount 14.5mm KPV MG turret, have a surface search radar

This one, No.119, won the honorary title of "Heroic FAC" due to sunk two ROC submarine chasers in 1965.

---Type 6602 torpedo boat---
In 1955, Chine bought 12 Pr.183 torpedo boats (NATO called "P6 Class") and its blueprints from the Soviet Union, then built other 63 with Soviet help, designated those ships as Type 6602. Main armament including 2 533mm torpedo launchers and 2 2M-3 twin 25mm AA guns.


---Type 6625 torpedo boat---
In 1959, the Soviet Union transferred the blueprints of Pr.184 torpedo boat to China, Chinese military was satisfied with it and approved the mass production plan in 1962. First China-build ship was delivered to the military in September 1968, designated as Type 6625. The first 11 ships were built in planing boat model, following ships equipped with hydrofoils. Main armament including 2 533mm torpedo launchers and 2 twin-mount 14.5mm KPV machine gun turrets.


---Type 026 torpedo boat---
In 1966, when the first Type 6625 was under construction, in the meantime designing of Type 026 began. Type 026 was based on Type 6625, but a little bit larger. Most ships were hydrofoils boats, but according to the literature I found, there was a model called Type 026Ⅱ that had no hydrofoils, it's rare to see though. Main armament including 2 533mm torpedo launchers and 2 Type 69 twin 14.5mm MGs. Type 6625 and Type 026 shared the same NATO nickname "Huchuan Class".


---Type 027ⅡB large torpedo boat
Type 027ⅡB (NATO nickname: Huzhou) is the first torpedo boat completely designed and built by Chinese self. Designing stared in 1966, and the first ship finished in 1976. Mass production never began due to development of more powerful missile boats, only a few were built (the most seen one is No.5238). Main armament including 4 533mm torpedo launchers and 2 Type 61 twin 25mm AA guns.

Awesome...will you be drawing any of the former IJN ships that served in the PLAN, by any chance? IIRC there were at least a couple gunboats that served.
