In the late 1960's, the Sayikoian Navy began designing and building a new class of larger, purpose built SSBN's to follow up the earlier, Type 074 Class which were designed in the mid 1960's, which were mostly experimental boats to see if Sayikoia's shipyards could produce a nuclear ballistic missile submarine. The Type 077 would be a longer, larger submarine, that was able to be produced in higher quantities, with 16 large SLBM's, that would be able to strike targets remaining much closer to friendly arctic waters. The first boat was laid down in 1979, and a total of 32 Type 077's would be produced in three distinct blocks, each with iterative design improvements, until 1990.
Hey Waff, awesome submission, but it looks like the image is jped'ed. :[

Project 128.2250A
[ img ]

The assumptions of Project 128.2250A was to design diesel-electric submarine with launching ballistic missiles capabilities. The main construction difficulty was to hold missiles silos in relative small hull. The displacement is only 2250T submaged. For this reason the missiles downscaled and there are only three of them. The ship is powered by three diesel engines and three electric motors. The power of machinery when ship is surfaced is 7350 Shp and when it is submerged the cumulative power of electric engines is 4650 Shp. Maximum speed on surface is 18.2 knots and 14.5 knots submerged. The main armament are three medium range ballistic missiles. Ship also is armed in six bow torpedo launchers. For communication with fleet ship also has landing platform and hangar for miniature helicopter. Main disadvantages of the design was limited armament strength and the not impressive operating range.

Komandirskiy class, The first of the new paradigm.

Built upon the shoulders of giants, the sole member of the Komandirskiy Class was at the time of her commission the most advanced vessel ever put to sea. It was not her armament, sensors, her fully automated torpedo room nor her networked computers that made her the secret pride of the Union. It was her powerplant, a cumulation of over half a century of research and development into nuclear fusion. Such a breakthrough only came about in the mid 2020s when OKB Takahashi-Yermolov, an all Bloc research team, not only broke even but produced a major power surplus out of their tokamak.

This immediately caught the attention of the Navy who were one of the major backers of the project, who started to draft up a submarine to trial such a fusion based powerplant. Using the preceeding Pr 982 Narval class ballistic missile submarines as a basis, OKB Kaltsit designed Pr 986. They were given largely free reign to pack as much technology as they wanted knowing that a fusion reactor had a nameplate capacity many times larger than a fission plant.

To that end she had not the usual sixteen launch tubes but twenty four, her final drives were not based of a steam turbine cycle but a purely electromagnetic drive boasting fewer moving parts. She also had way more automation than even the automated torpedo room which the Russian Navy had been using on and off since the 1980s, Her computers were power hungry beasts which aided the sonarmen by automatically filtering out background noise and boosting anything that might be of interest.

She was laid down in mid June of 2028 even when some of her design was still being worked on. However this did not bother the Navy, her hull was a known quantity even with an expanded missile bay, to them even if her consturction took a decade it would be worth in in having the most powerful submarine ever put to sea. Luckily her construction only took six years once the OKBs managed to figure every detail out. Secretly launched and comissioned in December of 2034 and put to sea for extensive trials. She made waves all over the naval world.

She broke the 40 knot barrier during her speed trials largely down to sheer brute force. Due to her unique propulsion and specialised props she was almost undetectable under twenty knots. Her networked computers managed to filter out enough noise to track the shadowing destroyer. However she was vulnerable to powerplant malfunctions; if at any point the reactor had to be completely powered down she was in effect mission killed. Plus she was ludicrously expensive, costing as much as four of her half sisters. However as former Supreme Leader Sakharov once said: "Progress is rarely ever cheap."

How dreams versus money leads to interesting results: The Enrico Dandolo class.

Around 1960, the Italian navy dreamed of operating ballistic missile submarines. The first SSBN operated by the USN was an major inspiration, to the point that the Italian government requested Polaris missiles.
However, the size and cost of those US Navy SSBN's was considered completely impossible for what the Italians would be able to operate. A solution was sought.

The solution was found in another European nation. The Netherlands had just commissioned the first 2 Dolfijn class submarines, a design that used 3 smaller diameter pressure hulls instead of one large. Such a design would allow for a design where the missile tubes did not penetrate the pressure hulls. The Italian navy sought cooperation to see if such an approach could work for their requirements.

It so happened to work, and in 1969 the Dandolo was commissioned, to an unique design created by the Italians and Dutch together. Instead of the 3 pressure hulls of the Dolfijn, the Dandolo had 6. The lower ones were not dissimilar to that of the Dolfijn, holding batteries, trim tanks, motors and generators. The upper pressure hull, holding the torpedo's, crew spaces, command spaces, sonar room and storage, was split into 4: one forwards (holding the command centre, sonar room and the torpedo's), one aft (holding storage space, some engineering spaces and part of the crew spaces) and one on each side of the 8 ballistic missile tubes amidships (holding more living spaces and storage mostly). This resulted in an unique almost square cross section of the outer hull.

Due to her high centre of gravity and large waterline beam, the Dandolo was very comfortable for a submarine on the surface. However, due to that same large beam and the large free flooding volume that had to be drained, she was slow to surface or submerge. Operationally, the submarine operated most of the time with only the sail above the water or snorkelling at periscope depth because of that. The Dandolo had an submerged displacement of 2475 tons and could reach a top speed of 15.5 knots submerged. She operated normally with a crew of 79.

The two Dandolo class submarines were decommissioned in the 1990's and were replaced by more conventional diesel-electric submarines without ballistic missile capabilities.

SNMB-A (Submarino Nuclear de Misseis Balísticos-Alfa) Project

[ img ]

Following the end of the Second Great Northern War, it had once again become clear that the submarine force was an integral part of the Commonwealth's naval force, being instrumental in the isolation of German and Intermarium colonial holdings in Africa along with securing the Pan Oceanic Pact's eastern flank against the capable Japanese and Chinese navies.

However, in the following years, the development of strategic nuclear weapons had begun to spiral out of control across much of the major powers, and although Portugal had vast knowledge and experience in the development/operation of nuclear reactors, the weaponization of the tecnology had so far not been deemed of importance, mostly because of unreliable delivery systems worldwide, and low stockpiles up to then. Now, has the arms race once again spiraled out of control, it was feared that Portugals european mainlandm along with its east asian domains became an easy target to nuclear strike in the face of an unempressive WMD deterrent.

As such, it was decided to develop a cost effective, "small" yet extremelly capable nuclear deterrent, and given the nations experience in submarine shipbuilding, and the inherent survivability of the platform, a ballistic missile sub was to be procured, sharing component with Portugal's and Australia's next gen SSNs, namely the reactor, drive train and sensor suite.

SNMB, as envisioned, would be an hybrid single/double hull design.
The single hulled forward compartment (4 decks) would be reserved for crew accomodations, torpedo room, control room, etc... along with the 16 missile silos.
The doble hulled rear compartment (3 decks) would be reserved for the machinery spaces, reactor and respective control rooms.

The submarine was to use a natural circulation, pressurized water nuclear reactor and an electric drive which removed the need for reduction gears, bringing down noise levels tremendously. Rafting of the machinery and the use of anechoic coating were also required.

Sensor suite and combat managment system was to be completely shared with the next gen SSN. It includes 6 dual mode main flank arrays, each complemented by a passive ranging sonar. In the bow there would be a conformal horseshoe shaped dual mode array, complemented by a low frequency mine detection sonar in the sail and by a towed array in the back. Also included on both sides was a pair of towed accoustic decoys for extra survivability in case of detection.

The sub's unique double hull design allowed for some extra safety measures. Two escape capsules were located behind the missile compartment and above the reactor. Combined these could theoretically fit the entire 91 person crew, and could be launched on the move across the entire operating depth range of the sub. These were supplemented by and emmergency distress floater.

At last, in accordance with the submarine's deterrent role, a comm floater was also present in an hangar located in the middle of the 2 escape capsules. This would allow fast and reliable communication with strategic decision centers in case of need.
