The Leviathan of Belfast: Short Brothers' S.37 Dominion

[ img ]

During the late 1930s, seeking to expand their aerial routes to North America and the Pacific, the British Air ministry had issued a specification for a new multi-engine flying boat capable of transatlantic flight. Included in the specification, was also the ability to fly from the West Coast of Canada to the Protectorate of Hawaii. The goal of these ambitious requirements were two fold: first, establish a reliable and continuous aerial link between the British Isles and Canada, and two: catch up with the Americans who were already flying across the Pacific via Midway and Pelew. Like they did with their previous S.23 Empire, Short would answer the call, this time with their largest aircraft to date, the S.37 Dominion.
