The important bit, according to your post, was that you didn't know what the gun mounting would look like without the shield. This is a mounting laid bare- showing all the 'crunchy bits' that make it work. That was the reason that I picked this particular weapon, not the time frame. ;)

simple then. OR you research how that gun looks underneath, OR you take a gun without shield, OR you design your own (and it better be good :P)
