Here's a pretty good shot of the USN's standard late WWII sub deck gun, the 5"/L25.

This should give you a good idea on how the gun would look without the shield.

It is spposted to be a post world war one sub.

The important bit, according to your post, was that you didn't know what the gun mounting would look like without the shield. This is a mounting laid bare- showing all the 'crunchy bits' that make it work. That was the reason that I picked this particular weapon, not the time frame.

simple then. OR you research how that gun looks underneath, OR you take a gun without shield, OR you design your own (and it better be good )
