Naval Jet Fighters.

This is going to be very brief introduction as I haven't got time to figure out that much on their backstories. On long story short, Kominterns post WWII military aircraft production was dominated by two major design bureys and their associated factories; Tomashevits OKB and Kortsagin OKB. Of those the latter was specialized on designing carrierborne aircrafts. Here's little bit more detailed info on each design.

Kortsagin I-12 "Forester": A small single-engined day fighter specially developted for carrier operations. First jet fighter to serve onboard carriers.

Tomashevits I-7/I-7A "Ferocious": Land based single-engined fighter modified for naval use. The design is a follow-on on the earlier I-4 with high shoulder mounted wing instead of the low-mounted "F-5" style wing of the earlier design. I-4 and I-7 design both featuers othervice same general characterist and was the first Mach 2 fighters for Komintern. I-7A has different engine air-intakes.

Kortsagin I-11 "Flamer": Seccond purely navaluse designed single engined fighter. MiG-23/Phantom/Mirage F1 level fighter, design resambles alot of the French design.

Kortsagin I-13 "Freelance": improved version of the I-11 design. Features new turbofan engine, newer radar and Fly-By-line controls. Generaly par with the countenpory first wave 4th generation fighters as MiG-29, Mirage 2000 and F-16.

Kortsagin & Tomashevits I-37 "Fatal": Joint airforce/naval aviation design after the government decided that it wasen't economically feasible to produce paraler but different aircrafts of similar perfomance for both navy and airforce. For navy's sake the design was mainly developted for naval use and then adopted for landbase operations as this was tought to be more optimal than going the other way around. Initially mented to be low-level tactical attack aircraft but with the event of multipurpose radar and avionics it was easy to adopt the desing as a mediumweight fighter. I-37P is the dedicated naval version.


Kortsagin & Tomashevits I-47A/I-47M "Firkin": similary collobration design as the above. Orgins of this plane was the need for attack aircraft able to penetrate the USN airdefence umbrella and attack against USN carriers for the new "supercarriers" planned in the 80's. Thus the design called for high performance low-observabilty fighter-bomber. Eventually the design was married with new long range interceptor program and I-47 emerged in two variants for both naval and airforce use: single seater interceptor and twoseater attack version. As the development time stretched out, decision was made to introduce the first patch of the plane with only marginal stealth elements. I-47M features much more advanced stealth-elements and is starting to enter service.

Kortsagin I-37P/M Faintless
First jet powered figter abroad carriers. Mach 1 capable fighter-interceptor. I-37M featured lenghted nose with radar for air-to-air missiles. Both version served rather long servicetime and used as a light attackers in the later part of their career.

Kortasagin I-39 Fearless
Naval version of the Tomashevits I-23 design which itself was designed with co-operatively with Soviet Mikojan & Gurevits OKB. Kortsagin version featured high-mounted wing and modified airinlets as well more sophisticated avionics like first generation look-down-shoot down radar.

Kortsagin I-39M Fearless-B
Imporved version of the previous design. Featured more raised cocpit and rearview for the pilot. New radar and firecontrol system equal to the new fourth generation fighters entering to service for for airforce. Originally intended to feature new turbofan engine but plans were canceled to save time in the development

Kortsagin I-41 Freestyle/I-41A Freestyle-B
New fourth generation naval fighter designed solely for carrier use. Development started after the desicion to abbandon the "supercarrier" program and thus a new smaller fighter was needed. Designed to be small enough to fit the existing and up-comming "medium carriers". Airframe resambles scaled down version of the airforces larger I-29 Fullback. Developmet was strained by political dispute over the idea of having seperate and paralel fighter designs for naval aviation and for airforces. Yakovlev OKB in Soviet Union used the basic airframe of I-41 for their own supersonic VSTOL fighter project. It differens from I-41 by having large single R-79 turbofan with rotating muzzle instead two smaller turbofans.


Kortsagin & Tomashevits I-47A/I-47M "Firkin":
During the 80's a decision was made to return once again to the supercarrier concept and plans for new 80 000 ton carriers were made. Large carrier was able to operate larger fighters and thus it was decided to introduce new large long range fighter-interceptor serving paralel with the smaller I-41 onboard the carriers. The develpment was married with airforces need for I-29 replacement and both Kortsagin and Tomashevits worked together to come up the I-47 Firkin. Th new fighter was supposed to counter US F-22 and featured similar stealth features, inboard weaponbays and supercruise ability. To fasten the introduction of the aircraft to serve onboard the new carriers, Navy decided to adopt slightly down-graded version of the plane with reduced stealth charecteristic. I-47M with full stealth suite is currently entering service.

Very nice and interesting, though only one comment on your name usage form: in standardized English transliteration of Russian Tomashevits ought to be Tomashevich. I guess you used the Finnish practice, right?

Yea, I use the finnish practice as IMO its more idiomatic and more closer to the actuall pronouncing of the russian letters

Kortsagin B-91/B-101 Boot
Large turboprop powered bomber to replace the warera carrierbased bombers and attack aircrafts. B-101 is dedicated ASW version following the main version. Some of the bomberversions were later modified to tankers and EW aircrafts.

Tomashevits Sch-27A/M Ferocious/Ferocious-F
Twin engined jet fighter-bomber. Airforce design modified for naval use. Well liked and robust design which served relatively long career onboard the carriers. Sch-27M featured tandem twin-seat for co-pilot, nav/attack radar and newer engines and was capable to carry the new R-45 or the R-15 supersonic ASMs. Both versions had specialised reccevariants as well.

Kortsagin & Tomashevits I-29KIB Finback
After the cancelation of the supercarrier programe and it's associated longrange attack aircraft navy started to seek new and smaller attackplane being able to carry onboard the new medium carriers choosen instead of the supercarriers. In meanwhile Tomashevits was developing the new 4th generation fighter for airforces and made two paralel suggestions. Both featured two turbofan engines and large sidemounted "MiG-25/F-15" style intakes. Main difference was the tail, first version featured twin tailfin fitted in distigtive tailbooms and the seccond version fielded single tailfin. The first version won the airforces competition. Tomashevits was ordered however to co-operate with Kortsagin to design a new attack aircraft and the two OKBs chosed to base the design to the single tailfin version of the I-29 design. End result was Tornado/F-15E scale twinseated attack and interdiction aircraft which main role was to penetrate the USN airdefence and attack against US carriers.

Kortsagin Sch-30 Taifun-Sch Boulder

Kortsagin's Taifun program was the end result of lenghty study over the optimal aircraft composition onboard different size carriers. Kortsagin came into conclusion that eventually it was optimal to feature single airframe to perform all the aircraft roles aside fighters and supersonic attackers. This would easen the logistical, service, overhauling and training of the whole airgroup onboard the carriers. Taifun project emerged as a modular constructive airframes of two main variants which the other was slightly larger than the other. The smaller basic variant featured subvariants of subsonic attacker, EW and tankerplane and the larger basic variant featured AWACS, carrierbrone transport and ASW variants. Both versions featured similar basic airframe with highmounted sweptwings and turbofan engines fitted on pylons in the rear fusagle.

Kortsagin & Tomashevits I-47KIB/KIBN Firkin-C/F
fighter-bomber version of the I-47 with two man crew. Followed the same practice as the fighter version and the first model featured reduced stealth charesteristics.

Excellent, just excellent!

Any chance these Soviet never-were will make it into the never-were FD section as the proper Soviet types?
If not I'd be tempted to do some work on them.

Well yes i've always kinda promised to my self that one day i will finish them up in soviet colours as well...some day...sadly there is just so much to do and that day never seems to come. But certainly if you want to you can remodel them to soviets colour.
