The type XXXI was a large Walter-type submarine. It was equipped with Taifun SAMs (8) und A7M SSMs (16). The missiles could only fire surfaced, refueling and arming had to be done after surfacing. The type earned much critics for that and it prooved less usable in combat. Only 4 units were built until production switched to the type XXXIb.

Looks nice- downright awesome in fact.
Thing looks like its gonna submerge and surface like a crippled whale, though.

 sure, it would have had a divingtime you could have a cup of tea in. And cookies.

...you don't say?

The first design of type XXXI was to be equipped with Fi-103M (a navalized V-1) missiles like the cruiser Passau was. But tests showed the missile vulnerable at diving tests. Further streaming tests with a model showed turbulences. The design was rejected.

The b-mod of the type XXXI sub saw A7M replaced by A17MU. The two times bigger missiles were stored in watertight shells and also watertight compartments. The XXXIb-type was the first submarine capable of firing a missile submerged. The missile was fired with its shell, the shell was dropped after the missile was airborne. The A17MU carried a warhead of 2.800 lbs and had a range of max. 320 km. When the first small nuclear warheads where developed, the A17MU was still in use and the also still acting XXXIb-class subs became the first nuclear armed submarines.
